Raise Healthy Eaters

“The produce manager is more important to my children’s health than the pediatrician.”—Meryl Streep

Our local farmers market is a wonderful classroom for healthy living. Children love meeting the people who grow their food and choosing fruits and vegetables themselves. Be sure to stop by the information booth at our local Farmers Market where little ones can participate in the Carrots for Kids program and choose either a crisp carrot from one of our local farmers and/or a delicious mini bagel baked fresh by Theodore’s Fine Foods.

Growing food at home can spark curiosity and excitement. Even a small pot of herbs can make a difference.

If your child loves guacamole or salsa, help them grow cilantro and a tomato plant, then use their harvest to make fresh salsa together. Take them to a local nursery and let them explore the herbs, vegetables and plants they can grow.

Seeing all the possibilities can spark their imagination, build excitement and help them choose something they are eager to plant and eat. Whether it’s herbs on a patio, tomatoes in a garden bed or strawberries in a container, children are far more likely to try foods they have helped grow themselves.

Healthy humans aren’t raised through nutrition facts alone. They are raised through experiences — growing food, exploring farmers markets, helping in the kitchen and sharing meals together. When healthy food is connected to fun, curiosity and family, children develop habits that can nourish them for a lifetime.
