Hey Ho, Let’s Go!

Yes, it’s as simple as that. Once you have decided what to do for your health and wellness journey, the only thing left is to implement your goals into action.

Procrastination is something I’ve struggled with my whole life. It’s not laziness, it’s just a mindset that I have more time to do something, so it’s OK to put it off — until a deadline forces me to act.

As the punk rock group The Ramones once sang —“Hey Ho, Let’s Go!”

This technique forces all the thoughts and considerations I’ve tossed around to come together. I am usually pleased with the result.

I realize I could have reduced the stress and angst of waiting until the pressure is on. Why? I believe it’s because I’ve had success using this strategy over the years. Is this the best way to operate? I will say it frankly: It’s not ideal to wait too long to get something done.

I have made it my new mission to do things proactively. To do so, I’ve employed several tricks to accelerate my output. These tricks work for both academic and physical activities.

  • Mentally set a deadline prior to the actual one.
  • Use the snowball effect. It helps build momentum.
  • Push through mental or physical obstacles.
  • Celebrate early success!

I have taken this philosophy seriously, and it has worked. I don’t have a deadline in my mind. I just do it. While I might be tired or sore, once my mind says, “Hey Ho, Let’s Go,” I am motivated to accomplish my goal.

I realize that the only thing standing in my way is … me! Sound familiar?

While that’s a rough reality to swallow, that acknowledgment allows me to focus my energies to keep my routines consistent and on a regular schedule.

It’s easier to accomplish goals when you actively participate in the process. Sometimes we create a deer in the headlights effect. Being frozen and unable to move. In those moments, my little mantra helps me a lot.

“Hey Ho, Let’s Go!” Try it! It works for me, and I’m sure it will for you too by creating the sense of urgency to get things done on time.
